Stay Connected! – Would you like the Council on Aging newsletter, The Outlook, mailed to you every month?  For more information, contact Carol Wood at the Senior Center.  Makes a great gift!

Respite/Companion Care Program – Billerica’s Respite Care Program can provide companionship and supervisory care for your loved one, which allows you time to rest, take care of yourself, or continue working.  If you are caring for an elderly relative who should not be left alone, we can provide services occasionally or on a regular basis.  Companions prepare light meals and snacks, provide reminders to take medications, be a friend to your loved one, and contact emergency services if needed.  Please contact Lauren Gray at 978-647-09916, ext. 226 or by e-mail:  lgray@town.billerica.ma.us.

Help Keep Our Troops Warm!!!  The knitters at the Senior Center need yarn to make hats and slippers for our deployed troops.  They also make hats and blankets for babies in area hospitals.  They need 3-ply worsted weight yarn in dark or muted colors for the military and 3 -ply baby or sport weight yarn in pastel colors for the little ones.  Thank you for any donations dropped off at the Senior Center.

Do Your Gift Shopping! -- The Busy Hands Gift Shop at the Billerica Senior Center, located at 25 Concord Road, has many handmade, one-of-a-kind items.  Your family and friends will be impressed with your thoughtfulness.  Come by and browse our shop Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Our Fitness Center is OPEN! -- The hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  We have a treadmill, elliptical machine, bike, and two stations of free weights.  Funding for the exercise equipment was made possible by Lahey Clinic. 

Need a Notary Public? – The Senior Center now has someone who will go to you home if you need something notarized.  For more information, call 978-671-0916/

NEW! Caregiver Support Group -- A new Caregiver Support Group will meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., starting November 5. Elaine Patsourakos, MSW, a Licensed Independent Certified Social Worker from Billerica, will lead the group.  There is no cost, and the group is open to anyone caring for an elderly relative or friend.



Volunteer Opportunities

Contact the Billerica Senior Center at 978-671-0916 for more information or to sign up for the following volunteer opportunities. 

Medical Transportation:  We need drivers who enjoy working with the elderly to take Billerica seniors to medical appointments at local medical centers Monday through Friday.  Mileage reimbursement is available.

Telephone Receptionists:  Receptionists are needed to answer phones, greet visitors and convey general information.  Monday through Friday shifts are available from 8:15 to 4:00.

Food Shopping Assistance:  Two options:  take a senior shopping or do the shopping for the senior.

Friendly Home Visitor: Make 1-hour weekly visit.

Telephone Reassurance:  Make daily phone call.

Drivers for Meals on Wheels:  Deliver home meals.

Social Events: Assist at parties, outings. etc.

Recreation:  Call BINGO, crafts, cards, theater/choral.

Decorator: For holidays and social events

Library:  Organize and sort books

Computer Work:  Projects using Publisher and Excel

June Activities

SHINE (Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders) Appointments – June 4 and 17.

Learn Total Control – June 3, 12, and 19 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.  This is a new program, developed by Emerson Hospital Chief Physical Therapist, Judy Curless, that teaches how to have total bladder control.  There are three sessions.  Class is limited to 12 participants.  Registration for all three classes is $10.00.  Sign up at the front desk. 

Ironstone Farm Presentation -- Friday, June 5 at 10:30 a.m.  A representative from Challenge Unlimited and Ironstone Farm will provide information about therapeutic, athletic and recreational services available for individuals with and without disabilities.  Programs for seniors will also be discussed.

“Get Med Smart” – Monday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m.  A representative from Lowell General Hospital will present this workshop on medication education.  Learn what questions to ask your pharmacist, the importance of keeping an accurate and up-to-date record of your medications, proper medication storage and much more!

Billerica Bandstand -- Monday, June 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Come to the Senior Center and enjoy lunch and dancing on Monday, May 18 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  There will also be a 50/50 raffle.  Reserve your spot and get your ticket for $4.00 at the reception desk. 

Healthy Eating for Successful Living in Older Adults – Wednesday, June 10.  Our new Healthy Eating for Successful Living in Older Adults workshop will help you make that transition to the healthy side.  As a class, we will explore food options, learn an easy way to read food labels, watch a healthy meal preparation, share recipes and have lunch at a local eatery!  The workshop runs for six weeks, starting Wednesday, June 10 from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m.  Registration is $10, which includes a manual, food log and lunch at a restaurant. Sign up at the front desk.

Identity Theft Information -- Monday, June 15 at 10:00 a.m.  Mike McGrath of the Stoneham Bank and a representative from the Billerica Police Department will present information on identity theft and financial exploitation.  There will be a raffle and giveaways, as well as refreshments.

Medicare Health Plan Options -- Wednesday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m.  A representative from Blue Cross-Blue Shield of MA will explain Medicare, the new Medicare drug benefit, Medigap Plans and Medicare Advantage.  This popular seminar explains complex information so it is easy to understand.  All are welcome, regardless of your insurance coverage.  Sign up at the front desk.

Free History Lecture -- June 25 at 10 a.m.  See a presentation by Paul Hogman on “Flags of Our Country”.  Learn about the various flags and how they came into existence.
Bar-B-Q at the Elks -- Friday, June 26 at 11:00 a.m.  The Billerica Firefighters will host a Western Theme Barbecue at the Elks for Billerica Seniors on Friday, June 26 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.  Entertainment by Greg Curtis is funded in part by a grant from the Billerica Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Mass. Cultural Council, a State agency.  Tickets are $4.00 and for sale at the Billerica Council on Aging.
June Book Club -- Tuesday, June 30 at 12:30 p.m.  The Book Club will meet on Tuesday, June 30 at 12:30 p.m. with Paul Hogman.  The group will discuss “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
