Benefits of Volunteering with Seniors
Volunteering with seniors not only benefits them because it gives them someone to talk to and spend time with, but those giving their time also reap the rewards.

  • Learn
You are never too old to learn something new.  Learning new skills keeps your mind engaged and sharp.  One of the lesser known benefits of volunteering is that it creates opportunities to build new friendships.
  • Share Your Skills
Share what you already know in a new way.  The National Institute on Aging reported that participating in activities that are meaningful and productive may lower the risk of dementia and other health problems in seniors.
  • Make A Difference
As you volunteer more, you might start to feel a higher sense of purpose and fulfillment from your life. It’s a chance to break out of your daily routine and expand your horizons.
  • Gain Experience
A study done at Wharton College found that people who give their time felt more capable, confident and useful. Since they were able to accomplish one thing, they feel they will easily accomplish tasks in the future.

How to Volunteer with Seniors
There are so many ways to volunteer with seniors. Depending on how much time you have to give and what you’re interested in doing, you will find plenty of ways that seniors can benefit from spending time with you.

  • Listen & Talk
Our Outreach Department has opportunities to assist homebound residents with shopping or just caring weekly phone calls.
  • Bring Meals
The Meals on Wheels program, which is run by Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley and North Shore, is always looking for drivers and substitute drivers for Billerica and other communities.
  • Entertain
Do you have musical gift or an artistic skill you want to share with others?  Musical entertainment or craft classes are something we are eager to offer to our patrons.
  • Provide Transport
Our Transportation Department uses volunteer medical drivers to take local residents to medical appointments in Billerica and several other local communities.  Contract John in Transportation for more information on the program.
  • Organize
Help us at the COA!  We have opportunities to work in a variety of areas including our gift shop, front desk, maintenance and administrative areas.
